Since 1731
In Fuentes de Andalucía, Seville, we find ourselves in front of one of the bay-colored herds with the most tradition and prestige in the history of the Spanish breed and always in the hands of the same family. The exact origin of this herd is difficult to know due to its age, since no document has been found that gives us the exact date of its foundation. The first reference, however, is in the manual "Doctrine of the horse, and art of grazing dedicated to the Serene Mr. Don Juan, Prince of Portugal of Brazil". Thanks to him it is known that as early as 1731 there were specimens of this iron in the stables of the royal court and that they served for the circumscription of the royal family in important events held in said court. In 1852, the number of specimens increased with a batch of mares from Don Joaquín Fernández de Peñaranda, reaching 100 mares. The entire stud farm was covered for 40 years by stallions of Carthusian origin (cartujano) from Don Vicente Romero, of straight and oriental profile type. The market of this stud farm was, during the monarchy, Lisbon. Among the saddle horses of King Don Carlos of Portugal and in the stallion depots of this nation, there were always specimens of the breeding. During the Portuguese Republic, in 1920, the three-year-old foals "Azado" and "Escamadillo" were acquired to become state stallions. With this same breeding, the Spanish government also acquired, in 1914 and 1923 respectively, the foal "Naranjito" and the horse "Damasquino".
The ranch consisted of 100 broodmares until 1914, when the steam engine became general, thus reducing the market for equine products. Since that date, the number of mares has decreased due to the scrupulous selection carried out by Don José María de la Escalera and Fernández de Peñaranda, grandfather of the current owner, keeping about 40 P.R.E. without crossing with any other blood. He used a five-step ladder for the iron. From 1902 to 1969, Don José Luis de la Escalera y Vasco took charge of the herd, succeeding his father, Don José María de la Escalera. Among the destinations of his sales, we can highlight the Vienna School, the Army Stallions, the Barcelona Police, the Remonta, the Military Stud and the new breeders who today enjoy prestige.
In 1960, his widow, Doña Fernanda de la Escalera Avecilla, continued to run the ranch for 13 years until their children reached the age of majority. It was in 1973 when she decided to share it between her two children, Doña María Fernanda and Don José Luis, the latter being the one who continued both with the location, the Cortijo del Pozo Santo, and with the iron of his ancestors. From that moment on, Doña María Fernanda began to use her own iron and settled in San Gerardo. This breeding with brown and black fur will be guided with great knowledge and mastery by the owner's husband, Don Manuel de Novales Vasco (RIP) until the date of his death in a tragic road accident on January 16, 1991. As a consequence of this unexpected and sincere loss, his wife, who gives her name to the herd, takes over with the aim of continuing as best as possible the project that her husband had left unfinished. Therefore, it follows the same line traced as this one, consisting of a careful selection of its specimens that preserves the morphology and functionality in the purity and beauty of the PRE.
It is very likely that today it is the breeding that has obtained the most awards, distinctions and merits, both nationally and internationally. Likewise, this breeding is perhaps the one that has sold the most breeding animals throughout history, with specimens in more than 20 countries. It is also interesting to note that this is the stud farm that has received the most awards at the Spanish Championship and is the only stud farm to have a stallion, Ermitaño III, with the denomination "ELITE" granted by the Ministry of Agriculture. He is the only PRE horse in the world to have this distinction. In short, PRESTIGE, ANTIQUITY and QUALITY are the words that best define this legendary stud farm.
In 2021, our stud farm acquired a stallion 100% descended from Yeguada de Escalera: BARQUERO JF IV.
For the functionality, quality, and nobility of the Pure Spanish Breed horse.
His daughter Maravilla VMD, born in 2022 and kept at our stud farm, has inherited these qualities.
